WOOD & SUSTAINABILITY
"The wood I use is ethically sourced, reclaimed timber from around Hawke's Bay. Nothing goes to waste."
Here at Giftwood Design we feel strongly about living a life that cares for our environment and reduces waste, and like to do our part for the environment the best we can.
WOOD
We are mainly using reclaimed timber for our products and are trying to maximize the potential of every piece. By doing this we are reducing the waste that goes to landfill.

We source our timber locally from buildings that have been demolished or renovated. Every part of the timber can be used to make something or to be recycled forward.
Larger pieces of wood can be made anything from chopping boards to little jam spoons. We collect all the nails and metal parts that might come with the timber and take them to metal recycling. The process of working with timber produces bags and bags of sawdust and as it is natural and untreated, we offer it to our friends gardens or neighbors chickens and get fresh eggs in return. We also give some of our rimu offcuts and wood shavings to local pottery makers who like the spark it gives when firing their kilns.

Our main material we work with is native Rimu, which coloration varies from dark center to lighter outer part of the tree. Native Tawa is on the other hand very different, dense and beautifully light Scandinavian feel timber.
